Here you will find my bets for the third round of the state championship, but first of all let me welcome James Watson to Team Terry, he will without doubt prove his worth and help us to improve our service.
Sao Paulo vs Atletico Sorocaba (7pm)
After a comprehensive 5-0 win in the Copa Libertedores Sao Paulo get back underway in their quest to prevent Santos from winning a fourth straight Paulista title. Having demolished Bolivar in the first leg you can expect SP to rest players for the second leg whilst opting to field their strongest team in championship matches, Ganso should start this match ahead of Jadson while ex Sevilla front man Luis Fabiano will be given the opportunity to start upfront again. Atletico Sorocaba tend to give away a lot of set pieces which could prove extremely costly for them as Sao Paulo have dead ball specialist Rogerio Ceni in goal….yes that’s right a goalkeeper that takes free kicks and penalties, having scored from the spot against Bolivar Ceni now has 115 career goals and if you managed to see the game you’ll see that he’s actually a good goalkeeper as well. Taking all factors into consideration I can’t look beyond Sao Paulo for this game especially with their extremely strong home record.
Linense vs Ituano (9:30pm)
Linense host Ituano in what should be a very entertaining game, Linense have had an exceptional start to their Paulista campaign picking up four points from their opening two games, Ituano on the other hand find themselves in the relegation zone having failed to score in their opening two encounters. Ituano’s obvious lack of fire power could prove to be their downfall this season as they look to survive in the Paulista championship. I tipped against Linense first game of the season and they beat me with a commanding performance against Guarani so I’m hoping they do the opposite this game. Ituano have a major injury doubt over goalkeeper Anderson who has actually been Ituano’s shining light in the opening games.
Oeste vs Sao Caetano (9:30pm)
Sao Caetano put in an extremely impressive performance against Atletico Sorocaba beating them 2-1 away from home, the speed of Sao Caetano’s counter attacks were a joy to watch as they flooded players forward throughout the game. I’ve been disappointed with Serie C side Oeste so far who I expected to be a mid table side, they currently find themselves bottom of the league after two defeats and quiet frankly two rubbish performances. Oeste coach A.Silva has been quoted saying “we have not been good enough against Botafogo and Palmeiras but its early in the season and things will improve” I think they’ll start that improvement this game but it won’t be easy to get a result against Caetano. Having looked at both teams separate styles of play I can’t see anything but goals in this game.
Resende v Vasco (11pm)
Vasco have had a blistering start to their state championship and have shown that they really mean business in the Carioca this season. In their opening two games Vasco have scored 7 goals and conceded 2 whilst dominating possession in both games, I expect them to dominate the ball even more in this game as they look to adopt a 5 man midfield. Resende are expected to play a 4-5-1 formation and try to hit Vasco on the counter attack using their pace on the wings to exploit the gaps the Vasco full backs will leave when bombing forward. More often than not Dede will be isolated at the back for Vasco and although he’s a fantastic defender there’s only so much you can do against the possibility of four on rushing players. Key player to watch this game is Vasco midfielder Carlos Alberto, at 28 he is in his peak as a midfielder and having already grabbed 2 goals in 2 games as well as an assist the midfielder could be heading towards an impressive season for Vasco.
