Sunday Football Tips – 17/02/13Comments Off

Three tips again today, and all are above evens. In my opinion, they should all be below evens as I’d class them as having greater than 50% chance of success. Anyway, here they are…

Catania v Bologna (2pm)

Catania are quickly becoming my favourite Italian side. The odds are almost always too high, or the handicap too generous. At home they have been very impressive, losing twice (to Juventus and AC Milan) and winning 8 out of 12. These home wins include the 4-0 demolition of Lazio; and more recently, wins against Roma and Fiorentina. Remarkably, they are still above evens for the win today against a side who have lost 8 of their last 10 on the road. Bologna are yet to keep a clean sheet on the road this season, and have failed to score in 6 of their last 10. Against a team as formidable at home as Catania, this should only be going one way. Catania are a well rounded side with youth and experience and goals from everywhere. 2-0 home win.

Napoli v Sampdoria (2pm)

After a shock 3-0 home defeat in the Europa League at the hands of Plzen, you could be forgiven for thinking Napoli may have taken a turn for the worst. However, results like this occasionally crop up, and despite their possession dominance, Plzen (similarly to Juve at Celtic) managed to absorb the pressure and counter with conviction. In Serie A, Napoli have been very strong at home, They have scored in their last 25 home league games, and 16 in their last 5. Of their last 5 at home they have won 4, all by 2+ goals – highlighting their attacking strength. Defensively they have been strong too, and they missed Cannavaro in midweek. He should be back for this game and defensively, they should be able to keep Sampdoria at bay. The away side have caused some upsets this season, and some strange results too, notably their 6-0 win at home to Pescara. They are capable of goals, but have conceded 2+ in 7 of their last 11 on the road, so against the second best attack in the league, I’ll be surprised if they don’t make that 8/12. A convincing win for Napoli is on the cards, and the will be further incentivised by their poor showing in midweek. 3-0 Home Win

Reims v St Etienne (4pm)

My final tip of the weekend comes from France where an out of form Reims host Saint Etienne. The away side are rightfully at the top end of the table, and despite a poor run before Christmas, have been pretty consistent. Since the New Year, they have drawn one and won their last 4. Away from home they have lost just twice in 11. Reims are currently flirting with relegation, and are outside the bottom three on goal difference. They were without a win in 15 prior to their 2-1 win at bottom of the table Nancy last weekend. At home they have been tough to break down, so despite 0 wind in 7 at home, they have only lost twice. Saying this however, their opposition hasn’t been the strongest, and their upcoming run of home games will be difficult as they host 4 of the top 5 in their next 4 home games (St Etienne, PSG, Lyon and Rennes). Despite their resilience, Aubameyang is back from a thigh injury and since his return he has scored in 2/2 games – 11 in 23 this season. Should be a tight affair but I think the value lies with the away win – especially given their strong goal scoring form at present. 1-0 Away Win
