Well, let’s do something I probably thought I’d never do again this season. Whilst I’ll still never back Toronto, this is arguably just about as bad.
Philadelphia Union vs. Chivas USA – (2.00am)
The Union haven’t won in their past 4 outings, but that isn’t quite as bad as a Chivas side who haven’t won since March. The last win (without looking) I believe may have been their win over Vancouver, who we did indeed bet on, so maybe we’ll be a good luck charm for the Rojiblancos again this evening? OK, maybe not. There’s a big margin between losing by 1 goal and being hammered in MLS though. It usually takes an exceptionally bad showing on one end or something world class on the other. The Union will be without the services of Keon Daniel, Kleberson, potentially Lahoud and definitely top goal scorer Jack McInerney. Chivas have been under new management for a couple weeks now, and in that time they lost 1-0 in a tight LA derby and have since secured draws in Dallas, Montreal and at home to the in-form New England Revolution. They’ve conceded 3 goals in this 4 game period and looked very, very stubborn. Tonight they’ll definitely be debuting US International and new center back Carlos Bocanegra on his return to MLS. They’ve also completed the loan of Chivas Guadalajara striker Erick Torres, and he’s promising goals straight away. There’s usually goals involved with this shoddy Union defence, and MacMath is a keeper faltering on a regular basis. New keeper Olnikov will sit on the bench this evening, and MacMath way well crumble under pressure as usual. I think Chivas have been extremely organised and to take a 1-1 from Stade Saputo and a 0-0 in Frisco, against two teams that have been scoring for fun, is impressive and deserves some recognition. I probably wouldn’t take this bet if it wasn’t for the absence of Jack Mac and others, combined with Bocanegra and Torres’ arrivals, but given those factors are in place I think the odds are too high and these things haven’t really been accounted for.
