After a great week last week with 3/3 in the CONCACAF Champions League, I am now looking to continue this run with two tips this evening. Apologies for my weekend absence, but I am still away until Tuesday.
Valencia v Cruz Azul (1am)
This is potentially one thing or the other. The problem Liga MX Clubs provide for us in this competition is that we fail to see the middle ground. It’s either going to be a rather common Mexican road letdown, or more likely, a total thrashing. Tonight I’ll go for the second. Whilst Cruz are weaker away than home, it gets to a point here where you have to say the competition really is bad. Valencia were beaten 6-1 at home to Herediano, who a week later lost 3-0 away to Cruz. That simple math obviously doesn’t mean you should expect a game 8 goals apart, and I’ve looked in to this in more depth of course, but it’s probably the only reason you need to know! If Cruz play to their ability, and I expect a fairly strong team (not 100%) then it SHOULD be over by half-time!
Tijuana v Firpo (3am)
We are seeing some seriously comfy score lines in this competition, and that’s going to be repeated until its whittled down to the final 8, which could and should be a mix of MLS & Liga MX sides. Tijuana pulled out a typical Mexican away performance in the first leg. They drew 0-0 in Firpo and looked a different team (although still the better of the two) but its surprising how much comfort home offers to Mexicans. They did however win 3-2 away to CDV, which take my word is slightly tougher, so tonight is a good chance to take care of qualification earlier and allow themselves to rest players in a few weeks time. Firpo ate not even close to MLS standard really, let alone Liga MX teams on the road. Their should only be one winner on paper.
