The final game of the last 16 is between Belgium and the USA. The side that progresses will face the winner of Argentina v Switzerland in the quarter finals.
Belgium won all of their group games by one goal, whilst USA managed just the one win (2-1 against Ghana), but played well in the two other games and will class this campaign a success already having escaped a tough group that consisted of both Germany and Portugal. The European nation will be without Steven Defour after he was red carded against Korea, but as they had already qualified prior to this game several players were rested, so this isn’t of much importance.
Despite winning all three group games, Belgium are yet to convince me that they are contenders for this competition. They were fortunate to win against Russia and Algeria, and their 1-0 win over Korea wasn’t as straight forward as they would have liked either. I think that this US side has really got the energy and determination to get a result here in 90 minutes to give them a real chance of progressing to the quarter finals.
