Schalke host Mainz in the 7:30 Friday night kick-off in the Bundesliga to give them the chance to (albeit briefly) overtake Dortmund and go level on points with Leverkusen in 2nd place. Mainz will be hoping this isn't the case though, as they look to continue their good form that has seen them jump up to 7th place after just one defeat in seven.
Mainz aren't backable in this fixture in my opinion, and I think Schalke -0.75 is the way to go. Schalke have won their last four (100% record in 2014), and have had tough games too. They have beaten Wolfsburg 2-1 at home and Leverkusen 2-1 away alont with more striaght forward wins against weaker opposition in Hannover and Hamburg.
Mainz have won 3 of their last 5 on the road and 4 of their last 5 league games. Reading in to this a little more, and you'll understand why that isn't quite as impressive as it sounds. The 3 away wins have all come against struggling opposition, and although any win can be classed as a good one, wins against Bremen, Stuttgart and Hamburg are almost expected. If you look at their results against the tops clubs away from home and you will see:
Wolfsburg - Lost 3-0
Hertha BSC - Lost 3-1
Bayern Munich - Lost 4-1
They still have to play Gladbach, Dortmund and Leverkusen away, on top of this fixture.
I think the run of good results for the visitors will boost their confidence coming in to this game, but I also think that Schalke's run will 'trump' theirs and is the more likely to continue in this game. I think the hosts should win by 2+ goals.
