Vitesse have the opportunity to top the Dutch Eredivisie as they host AZ Alkmaar on the first day of this midweek set of league fixtures.
After their 1-1 draw at Feyenoord on Friday, Vitesse will be encouraged by the fact that Ajax were held at Utrecht, keeping them within touching distance. AZ beat Groningen 2-0 at home quite comfortably, bouncing back from their 1-0 defeat at PSV one week earlier.
For me, AZ's early form has worn off a fair bit, and they are looking less of a side than they were at the beginning of November. They've now won 2 of their last 9 thanks to this mini recovery. However, on the road, they have lost their last three, and have lost 7 in 10 away from home in the league. Their main issue is that they are weak defensively. They conceded too many chances on the road and can't create enough to compensate.
Away from home, AZ are totally different. They play will less attacking purpose and far less confidence. Today, they face a bouyant Vitesse side who have beaten Twente, PSV, Ajax, and Heerenveen already. Their only home defeat came against Feyenoord in October. They create chances and their attacking players rotate their positions making them hard to pick up. Havenaar will start on his own up front, with Piazon and Ibarra floating around him.
Vitesse will dictate the play from start to finish. They will create more (as they usaully do), and providing they convert their chances this should be a one sided affair that sees them get three points and top the table.
